Photography Competition: Thank You & Well Done!

Throughout the summer of 2008 EWB-UK ran a photography competition, with the aim of showcasing high quality images from members who had taken part in projects right across the globe that have and will have the greatest opportunity to bring about a step change in international development. We were pleased to receive some excellent and inspiring images, 14 of which were chosen to be shown across the UK in the 2008 EWB-UK photo exhibition.

Congratulations go to Stephen Jones, Joe Mulligan, Richard Cunliffe, Javier Gonzalez-Soria, Ian Baggs, Ameer Shaheed, and Victoria Hickman, who all had at least one of their inspiring images chosen, from countries such as Tanzania, Thailand, Krygyzstan, Kenya, Ecuador, El Salvador, India and Nepal.

With a choice of great images, it was hard to pick a winner. However, Thalia Konaris, co-CEO of EWB-UK, selected Joe Mulligan’s “Soweto East School Kids Try Out New Bridge” as the overall competition winner. She said:

“Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that it was very difficult to choose the winner. There was a large variety of good quality photos and it was difficult to prioritise on composition, message, colours etc. Soweto East School Kids was chosen because it has a very original and appealing composition, because it visually captures the essence of the project combining final product with its most critical users and also because it highlights the term appropriate in technologies for international development. A massive WELL DONE to everyone, thank you for sharing with us inspiring moments from your team's hard work, and congratulations to Joe Mulligan for winning a tough competition!”

Adam Booth, EWB Cambridge president

On Tues 4th November the Cambridge branch of Engineers Without Borders hosted a launch night for their photo exhibition in Great St. Mary's church. The grand and elegant venue was filled with over 50 guests during the course of the evening, who enjoyed the photographs on display along with some food and wine, kindly provided by sponsors Mott MacDonald.

Stephen Jones, a recently elected Trustee of EWB-UK, gave an inspiring talk about the work of EWB-UK, and described how the charity had grown since its foundation by students at the University of Cambridge in 2001.

The photo exhibition was up for the remainder of the week and attracted lots of interest from visitors to the church.
