Research

EWB-UK's Research Programme helps bridge the gap between universities, students, NGOs and communities.

About the Research Programme

EWB-UK links students and academia with communities and organisations in developing countries who have technical research needs. The aim of the Research Programme is to provide high quality research projects to students who wish to pursue real issues and face real challenges whilst raising awareness of the issues surrounding development. The EWB-UK research programme attempts to work organically within the existing course framework of engineering degrees and provide a platform for an exciting and stimulating project.

The projects offer more integrity and demand more aptitude than other projects allowing students to really show their technical abilities and skill.

The following video illustrates in brief the focus and drive behing the Research Programme and was filmed at the 2008 Research Conference

How it works

The research proposals from partner NGOs are assessed by EWB-UK for academic level and the project summaries are published publicly on our website and distributed to UK universities for students or academic staff to apply to. The projects are mostly aimed at 3rd and 4th year students looking for independent research, however, the structure is flexible and the projects can be approached from a group perspective and/or aimed at a higher or lower level from 1st year to PhD.

Upon a successful application, the student is granted access to the partner NGO and the EWB-UK support network to help put their skills to practical use and deepen their understanding of development by solving an identified technical problem. Once completed, the projects are published and then used for further research or put into action!

How do I become involved?

If you are a student or a young engineer you can sign up to one of our advertised research projects with partner NGOs. Alternatively by affiliating an existing project with us you can obtain support from EWB-UK.

The programme aims to form new relationships with partner NGOs and also involve the wider EWB-UK community in sharing knowledge that is gained from our projects. If you are an NGO with a technical need, or if you are a professional engineer wishing to mentor one of our projects then we would love to hear from you!
